Kapa Haka and a photoshoot?

First: I forgot to say last week, thank you to those who sent me birthday wishes and birthday cards! It was so sweet and definitely made my day. I really appreciate the thought and everything. Reminds me that I'm being thought of halfway around the world :)

Anyway. So the past couple days have been eventful to say the least. I woke up and finished my coughreallybadcough paper and then went for a run with Nicole. Running with her made me realize how unbelievably out of shape I really am. Gives me something to work for I suppose - to do the route that she runs without stopping to walk during it.

After showering I took a break to talk to some of my besties back home! Teige, Chelsea, Britta, and Whitney were all together (for those who don't know, those are my best friends from Metro) and hanging out. I will admit, it made me slightly more homesick that I wasn't in my sweats in Teige's basement making fun of Chelsea's weird mannerisms. But I didn't actually get as homesick as I had anticipated.

Last night was fun. Started studying for my Kapa Haka exam (that was this morning), basically learned a new language. I can tell you the basics of the Maori creation story, and spell all the names of the gods (Ranganui - Sky Father, Papa-tu-a-nuku - earth mother, Tane-mahuta - God of forest & land, Tawhiri-matea - god of sky storms, Haumia-tiketike - god of uncultivated foods, Rongo-ma-Tane - god of cultivated foods, Tangaroa - god of ocean & water, and Tumatauenga - god of war. JUST DID THAT FROM MEMORY. Also I don't know how to make the dash over the letters on my computer so they're not totally complete names), it was a pretty productive evening.

Last night I couldn't sleep so that was a bummer, but I got up this morning and took my Kapa Haka exam! Exams here are really weird. Instead of being in the lecture hall, we were split up into about nine different groups and the people proctoring the exams were totally random. The professors and tudors have nothing to do with students and the exam. You are not allowed to write anything for the first ten minutes of the exam, either. Not even take notes. It's "reading" time, which basically means you stare at the questions. Since I was so tired, I started nodding off.. but I think the exam went well. I was done after an hour so I hope I wrote enough - I was the first person in the room finished. Oh well. Then I went and ran some errands around uni and went back to my flat.

And then me and six of my friends did a photoshoot! Maddi is a photography major and I guess she does this often with her friends back home, so we walked around the Auckland War Museum (by my flat), in the Wintergardens, etc. It was fun; we might do it again. One person has posted pictures (thanks Meagan! 5/6 of the pictures below are hers), but I'm excited to see what the other four cameras have on them. Also, I obviously have tons of pictures of my friends but I figure those are less interesting to those who are reading this blog.

And I took yoga tonight! Doing lunges killed and I know I will be feeling it tomorrow but it was so wonderful to take a yoga class. Yay. Then I got sociology notes from a girl in my class so I can copy some and hopefully study on my trip and said my first goodbye to my friend Rob - since he's leaving Auckland on Wednesday. If the flight isn't canceled because of the ash.

And now it is 12:30am and my shuttle to the airport will be here in four and a half hours. That is SO miserable. But it's okay! I'll survive. I still have to pack and take a shower and copy sociology notes so sleep might not exactly happen for me tonight - hopefully I'll be able to get a couple hours in - but it'll be fine. I can always nap tomorrow if the wine tour doesn't work out, which it probably won't but I'm fine with it. I could always have a Rachel day when I nap and read and explore the dinky town of Nelson. It'll be okay regardless.

WOOOOT leaving tomorrow! First time traveling truly alone! Wish me luck!
